With other people who also have memory impairment (TRIO in Wales)

TRIO

If you’re living with memory impairment in North Wales, we’re here to help you live life to the full.

What is TRIO?

TRIO’s a care service for people living in North Wales with memory impairment. It’s a service all about supporting you to really get out there and do what you love in the company of someone else experiencing the same things as you – all while getting as much or as little support as you need from one of our fantastic companions. TRIO allows you live your life to the full and spend your day as you choose to.

 How does TRIO work?

TRIO brings you and someone else who has memory impairment together with a companion who will support you as much or as little as you need to enjoy your day together. We match you up with one of our companions and someone else who has memory impairment based on what you like doing, your personality, your likes and dislikes and how you like to be supported.

What will my companion support me to do?

Your companion will be specially trained to understand your condition and the best ways to support you. There are lots of things the three of you can get do together, things like:

  • Popping round to your companion’s house for a cup of tea and a chin wag;
  • Going shopping;
  • Cracking that tricky jigsaw together;
  • Going to the cinema, the theatre or to a bingo hall;
  • Watching movies on telly;
  • Baking;
  • Going to community groups and doing different activities like art, dancing, arts and crafts or music;
  • Going to the seaside, to the park or on a bit of an adventure outside of your local area.

Spending your day with someone else who’s living with memory loss can help you to better understand and cope with things together. You’ll also be able build a friendship and enjoy life together. TRIO is flexible and always based around your choices, what will work best for you and – most of all – how you want to spend your day.

When it comes to TRIO, three is most definitely company. Lots of people who use TRIO say that they’ve made some great friends through the service – and that their TRIO companion feels more like a close family member.

 How will I know if it’ll work for me?

First of all, we’ll meet you and your companion to talk about you, how you like to spend your day, your likes and dislikes and how you like to be supported. Based on this, we’ll match you up with another person (or two) with memory impairment who has similar interests and hobbies and is a good fit with your personality. We’ll also match you up with a companion who we think will suit you both. Next you’ll meet, get to know each-other and plan out some things you’d all like to do together.

How do I start using TRIO?

If you think this sounds like a good service for you, you can contact the team yourself or ask your companion or social worker to contact us for you. From there, the team will explain the referral process and next steps.
