Using domestic abuse experience to support others, Evelyn’s story #16Days

Evelyn* works across our Ruby and Turnaround teams, supporting female ex-offenders to explore the factors behind their offending behaviours. Time and time again, these women have experienced domestic abuse and this is often something they have accepted or ignored because of this becoming so normalised to them.

Evelyn supports these women, offering group courses or one-to-one sessions remotely during the pandemic. She looks at the patterns of abuse and helps women to see and understand how they have been coerced and manipulated. Often women do not see this and learning from others around them really helps.

And Evelyn draws on her own personal experience of domestic abuse to really relate to women and give them strategies to stay safe, happy and well. She understands them and helps them see that they are not alone. Evelyn wrote this poem as a reflection of what she experienced many years ago, the stark contrast of happy memories vs. dark days. This is what inspired her to support others.
