What is the PSS Parent-Baby service?

At PSS, we understand that becoming a new parent is a life-changing experience that, while it might be lovely, can feel a little bit overwhelming. There’s so much to take in, and sometimes it’s just not how you imagined it to be. You might feel more anxious than usual, things might feel confusing, or you might be experiencing difficult emotions. We get it, it’s a massive life change, and whether you’re pregnant or your baby’s already been born, our Parent-Baby Service is here to help you navigate your thoughts and feelings as a new parent.

We’ll support you to:

• Address any little worries you might have, so they don’t become bigger ones

• Become more ‘in tune’ with your baby

• Build a positive, lasting bond with your baby

• Become more confident with your baby

• Cope with a difficult birth or pregnancy, or if your baby was conceived in difficult circumstances

• Understand any confusing feelings you might be having

• Grow into your role as a parent

What types of groups can I come to?

Raising a baby takes a village, which is why we offer so many different groups and sessions - we’re passionate about growing our parenting community.

Our sessions are focused on creating a safe and open space for parents to bond with their babies, meet other parents and talk to the PSS Parent-Baby Service team in a supportive environment. From groups that are a walk in the park (literally, check out our Happy Striders group) to laughter sessions which are led by comedians, to crafting, yoga and loads more – there's something for everyone.

When I was first invited, I was like, ‘What will the mums say about me? What will they see when they see me? Will they think I’m different?’ and all of that, but everyone has been welcoming to me. It was safe, and it was relaxed.

Do I have to pay?

All our groups are free and run from bases all over the city, as well as in our head office, Eleanor Rathbone House.

Something else I’ve noticed is that when you leave, you leave differently. By the time you’ve left, you’re more relaxed, happier, and energetic. It feels like you’ve taken one deep breath, like you can breathe again. It’s what you look forward to, not being stuck in the same four walls and getting out.

Who can come along?

Our support is available to anyone who lives in Liverpool and is pregnant or has a child under two, and is looking for a bit of extra support when it comes to their family.

Do I need to be supported to join a group?

No, you can come along to one of our groups meet the team and find out if our Parent-Baby Service is the right support for you and your family.

Stories from people we've supported

Fatima's way out of anxiety

Fatima shared with us that she worked from home full-time, while her husband was out long hours as a delivery driver. Sometimes, this meant she wouldn’t leave the house for weeks at a time. With no close friends or family nearby, she often felt very alone

Anji's 'Mama Bear energy'

When Anji was first referred to the Parent-Baby Service, she was feeling low, anxious and overwhelmed. On top of becoming a new parent, she was also juggling lots of appointments, as well as caring responsibilities for her own mum.
