PSS in a nutshell
At PSS, we’ve got an important job to do; and that’s to help people make the most of their lives. Whether you’re working directly with the people who use our services, or behind the scenes in one of our offices, every day you’ll be helping to make other people feel happier, healthier and more supported.
We’re a social enterprise or, as we like to call it – a ‘business with a heart’. This means that all the money we make goes back into finding new ways to help people. Our aim is simple; we want to help people change their lives for the better – no matter what life throws at them. We’ve got offices across Merseyside, Wales, Manchester, Norfolk and Suffolk and the Midlands, where we’re making our stamp.
What’s our Newby House service all about?
Newby House is part of our Supported Living service in Liverpool; it’s a mental health reablement service based in Halewood. The service supports people to manage their mental health diagnosis and live happy, healthy lives. Newby offers a safe and supportive space for our tenants to live until they feel ready and able to live independently. Our awesome team support people to grow in confidence and manage their mental health challenges in daily life, to access their local community, to achieve their goals and to live life.
Anna* – who has lived at Newby House for a few years – struggles with complex mental health challenges which were only heightened by the pandemic. In 2020, she was detained under the Mental Health Act for her safety and stayed in hospital for twelve months in order for specialists to assess her needs. The advice was that Anna could no longer live within the community because of the risks this might present.
Knowing Anna well, our team at Newby were saddened by this decision. They didn’t believe this was the best option for Anna. So, rather than accepting this, they set-out to make a plan for Anna’s happiness with the full support of the local authority. They stopped at nothing to make this happen, looking at ways to support her to live the independent life she wanted with all the support she needed. And by working closely with Anna that’s exactly what they achieved.
Anna is so grateful to the team who refused to turn their back on her and she’s been thriving back in her home at Newby House ever since, managing her own medication and daily routine and making plans for the future. The next step for Anna is finding a place of her own in the local community with the support of a fabulous team who care so much about her.
