As their parent has an addiction to drugs or alcohol (Family Impact)
Family Impact: Drug and Alcohol
If you’re taking care of children in Merseyside and you or your family member has a drug and/or alcohol addiction, we can help.
What is Family Impact?
Family Impact is a service that supports families in Merseyside who are going through a difficult time because someone in the family is abusing substances. We support everyone involved – the family member (usually a mum or dad) with the addiction, the children, and those caring for the children when their family member isn’t able to due to their addition.
How can we help?
We’ve got a team of skilled, experienced people who give confidential advice, support and guidance to everybody in the family who is affected when a parent, or someone else in the family, is addicted to drugs or alcohol. That could be you, the children you care for or their parents. How we support you will depend on your situation and what you’re going through, but we can offer all kinds of support, both in group settings and on a one-to-one basis.
Supporting people who are taking care of their children, grandchildren or someone else’s children when their family member is misusing substances
We understand what it’s like when you’re taking care of the children on your own because your partner is suffering from addition or you’re taking care of someone’s children because a drug or alcohol problem means they aren’t able to themselves. We know what it’s like to be asked some difficult questions, to try and help the children cope with what’s happening and how hard it can sometimes be to cope yourself. We’re here to help you through everything – in your own way, at your own pace.
We’ve got a number of really popular support groups you can join, where you can get support from people just like you, who are also supporting children when their family member is in prison. We can also support you on a 1:1 basis, giving you help and advice with everything from emotional issues through to advice about school and housing.
We can support you with:
- One-to-one sessions for help and advice that is tailored to you
- Outreach support to provide flexible support, whenever you need it
- Really popular grandparent and family member support groups where you can get support from and meet people just like you, who are also supporting children because their family member is in prison.
- Guest speaker presentations talking through the issues affecting you and your family
- Advice on and signposting to recovery options for your loved one
- Information and guidance (including housing, budgeting and health)
Supporting children who are affected by their family member’s drugs or alcohol misuse
Here at PSS, we have specially-trained family workers who are here to help support children whose family members are suffering from a drug or alcohol addiction. We run a series of groups, where children who are in exactly the same position can get together and have fun, share experiences, go on days out, have fun and understand that they’re not alone – lots of other children have been through what they’re going through and it’s not their fault.
We’ll help them make sense of their emotions, come to terms with their family member’s illness and move forward in a positive way.
If you’re suffering from addiction and have a child
We understand that recovering from a drug or alcohol addiction can be very difficult, especially when you have children to think about, too. How we support you will depend entirely on you – and we can provide help that is tailored to you, or point you in the right direction.
As part of our Family Impact service, you’ll have your own family worker who can advise you about other services which can help with your substance misuse directly. They’ll also help your children and sometimes other members of your family to understand what you’re going through. They work with the whole family to make your family stronger, support more positive and healthy relationships and help you to overcome any problems you’re going through as a family.
As part of our Family Impact service, you can get:
- Advice on and signposting to recovery options to support you overcome your addiction.
- One-to-one sessions and group workshops to support you and your family.
- Outreach support to provide flexible help, whenever you need it.
